His skin also turns red and he acts on pure instinct and bloodlust. The wielder of Senbonzakura is the 6th division captain of the Gotei 13 and 28th head of the Kuchiki Clan, Byakuya Kuchiki. This blade has the ability to separate itself into a thousand tiny blades that all appear to be like sakura blossoms.
These blades are too small to be seen with the naked eye, but appear pink when light refracts on them. Byakuya can then control all these blades however he wishes. In its more advanced Bankai form, the number of blades greatly increases, allowing for more devastating techniques, such as gokei "throat scene".
This is Ichigo's Zanpakuto and is pretty simple. Much like Kenpachi's, this blade greatly enhances Ichigo's speed and power. When attacking, Zangetsu absorbs his spiritual energy, condenses it and then launches this condensed energy from its blade.
Ichigo mainly uses this for his famous Getsuga Tensho attack. Tensa Zangetsu, his Bankai takes this to another level. He becomes faster, stronger and more durable.
Shinji is a former member of the Visored and current captain of the 5th division in the Gotei When Shinji spins his sword, a pink mist comes out of it and anybody who smells it gets hit with his sword's ability, "Upside Down World". This ability flips the victim's perception. Left becomes right, up becomes down and backward becomes forwards. Shinji can even invert his words causing his opponents to become even more confused and disoriented.
This ability also inverts the senses of the victims as well. That is, if they were to get cut on their left leg, they would think it was their right leg that received the damage. Shunsui also holds the distinction of being the captain of the first division, and the former captain of the 8th division. This sword's special ability can force anyone who steps into the range of Shunsui's spiritual pressure into 'playing games'.
Upon finding him, Muramasa asks what he is, and Zangetsu states he is Ichigo's purest instincts. When Muramasa attempts to take control of Zangetsu by " freeing " his true desires, a smirking Zangetsu attacks him.
Caught by surprise, Muramasa is quickly forced into an all-out fight. Zangetsu proves to be superior in both speed and strength, forcing Muramasa to instead rely on his invisible binding powers to restrain him like he restrained Ichigo. Breaking free from his bonds, Ichigo saves Zangetsu and states Zangetsu is a part of him too.
As both Muramasa and Zangetsu express shock at Ichigo's actions, Ichigo states while he would be happy for Zangetsu to leave him, he is still a part of Ichigo. Forcing Muramasa out of his mind, Ichigo continues the fight in the outside world. When Ichigo is forced to fight Zangetsu using his Bankai, Zangetsu offers his assistance, for he is free of the manifestation's influence, so Ichigo cannot draw on his power at all without Zangetsu's consent, meaning Ichigo would have to fight without his Hollow mask to suppress Zangetsu.
During Ichigo's final battle with Ulquiorra Cifer , the latter seemingly kills him with a point-blank Cero Oscuras through his chest. She fails to notice Ichigo's hair growing longer and beginning to resemble a mane. Shocked at his enemy's unexpected revival and believing Ichigo to be dead, Ulquiorra demands to know who he is.
Summoning his sword to his hand without touching it, Zangetsu answers with a roar. Believing words are useless, Ulquiorra fires a Cero Oscuras , but to his surprise, Zangetsu fires a Cero powerful enough to counter it. As Ulquiorra refuses to believe a Human could release a Cero, especially one capable of blowing away his own, Zangetsu appears behind him and effortlessly rips off Ulquiorra's left arm.
Quickly regenerating the arm, Ulquiorra reveals his true power is not his offensive abilities, but his ability to instantly regenerate any non-vital body part. When the attack misses, creating a massive explosion in the desert, Ulquiorra states to himself it is a difficult technique to control.
When Zangetsu throws the detached arm at him, Ulquiorra slashes it away and thrusts the spear. Catching it with a single hand, Zangetsu crushes it. Ulquiorra is left dumbfounded, allowing Zangetsu to slice him down the torso and slam him to the ground.
As Ulquiorra states he cannot believe he was defeated by a Human turned Hollow, Zangetsu steps on Ulquiorra's head and begins charging a Cero. Commenting on how Zangetsu shows no mercy, something very Hollow-like, Ulquiorra states because Zangetsu has beaten him, he has no reason to live, and tells him to do it. Zangetsu releases the Cero, creating a vast and powerful explosion on the dome of Las Noches.
Ulquiorra survives, but his left arm, both legs, and lower torso are blown away in the blast. Tossing his tattered body aside, Zangetsu prepares to impale his throat with his sword.
The explosion shatters Ichigo's mask, and he falls to the ground. As his body and leg begins to regenerate, Ulquiorra thinks to himself it is merely a front, for his internal organs were decimated from Zangetsu's Cero and cannot regenerate.
Though he believes Ichigo is finally dead, the hole in Ichigo's chest completely repairs itself, and Ichigo gets up, shocking Ulquiorra with his ability to use High-Speed Regeneration. Later, when Ichigo is fighting the manifestation in his inner world, the manifestation makes his way to Ichigo and rips Zangetsu out of Ichigo's body. When Ichigo sees Zangetsu, he is in his Bankai state as well, but he is now wearing a black mask with horns and white lines stretching vertically across the eyes.
Greeting Ichigo, who is shocked by his sudden appearance, Zangetsu removes his mask and asks if he recognizes him. Wondering how Zangetsu is standing before him, Ichigo states he should have disappeared when Ichigo defeated him while training with the Visored. Zangetsu reminds Ichigo how he said that if he wanted to control his power, he should not die before his return.
When Ichigo states he was trying to crush him out back during his training, Zangetsu says it is unfortunate, since he is still around. When Ichigo asks him why his appearance changed, the manifestation informs him he took this form when he killed Ulquiorra and states Ichigo fears this form, for the destructive power overwhelms his heart to the point where he cannot even Hollowfy properly.
When Ichigo concludes he has to fight Zangetsu and win, the manifestation tells him this is incorrect, for Ichigo is going to fight both of them in a one-on-one fight. They begin to fuse together, much to Ichigo's confusion, and take on a new form. Upon fusing, they take on a hybrid appearance: Zangetsu's white Bankai coat, black horn mask remnant, white-colored hair, and left Hollowfied eye, alongside Tensa Zangetsu's appearance and black Bankai sword.
Stating they are two parts of a single being, the source of Ichigo's power, they begin fighting him. Cutting Ichigo's own Tensa Zangetsu in half, the merged spirit throws Ichigo into a building and notes Ichigo still will not fall. Much to the merged spirit's surprise, Ichigo lets go of his blade and allows himself to be stabbed. Beginning to shed tears, he asks Ichigo if he remembers earlier in the battle when he said what Ichigo wanted to protect was not what he wanted to protect.
Urahara manages to restore Ichigo's powers, but his Reiatsu is unstable, for the Modified Soul was incomplete. As a result, Zangetsu attempts to take over Ichigo's body, but is suppressed. Kin , Urahara leaves with Kon to find a way to stabilize Ichigo's Reiatsu. While they are absent, Ichigo has difficulties in suppressing Zangetsu. In a blast of black-red Reiatsu, Ichigo's body is transformed into his first full Hollow form, and the Hollow began wandering through the Seireitei.
Kin and state Ichigo cannot return to a Shinigami nor become a complete Hollow. Before he can be struck down, Zangetsu is saved by Rukia Kuchiki. During the conversation, the old man admits he bears the appearance of Yhwach, a Quincy leader whom Ichigo disdains.
Still using the name Zangetsu, the man then tells Ichigo he hid his true identity to sabotage the boy on purpose; The Quincy race was nearly destroyed by Soul Reapers, and Zangetsu felt he would have to kill Ichigo if he took up such a title.
However, Zangetsu realized Ichigo could never be like the Soul Reaper who tested the Quincy, and the old man let himself fade away from existence so Ichigo could meet his true Zanpakuto.
The crazed creature is a mixed of Ichigo's Soul Reaper powers and a Hollow which his mother passed down to him at his brith. After three months of Jinzen inside the Dangai, Ichigo achieves a perfect union with Zangetsu, learning the only method that could utterly destroy Aizen in his Hogyoku form. His appearance has only slightly changed when he emerges, sporting longer hair and a chain wrapped around his arm.
Aizen proves to be a difficult enemy, morphing into a far more powerful Hollow form with the Hogyoku. Ichigo then unleashes the FGT, or Final Getsuga Tenshou — his torso and jaw now wrapped in grey pieces of cloth, his hair pitch black and long. His Mugetsu obliterates Aizen, defeating him once and for all. Upon losing all his powers after stopping Aizen, Ichigo finds out about a new power that only humans possess.
He undergoes training under Kugo Ginjou, achieving his Fullbring form at the end. Here, he is covered in a bony armor from head to toe, obtaining a short sword with a glimmering edge. Fullbring Ichigo can generate swirling blasts of reiatsu, comparable to Getsuga Tenshou in appearance, if not in strength.
Luckily for him, Ginjou steals his Fullbring, allowing Rukia to inject him with Shinigami powers once again. After failing to defeat Yhwach and having his bankai sliced cleanly in half by Haschwalth , Ichigo travels to the Royal Realm, where swordmaster Oetsu Nimaiya teaches him how to really commune with Zangetsu.
Here, he discovers that both his Quincy and his Hollow powers belong to him, neither of them being an unwanted side-effect as he once believed. Nimaiya forges his new zanpakutos, and after a blinding flash of light, Ichigo is left holding two black Zangetsus, one short and solid, the other long and hollow. At this point, Ichigo can perform a double Getsuga, known as Getsuga Juujishou, with devastating effect.
