What is the significance of wells in the bible

Why are wells so important? What are the different kinds of spiritual wells in existence and what roles do they play in our lives today?

How do you know the kind of wells in operation in your life? These are a few of the questions we will examine in this message. I pray that the Lord will give you understanding as you read on. In order to put things in the right perspective we will start by defining a well. As regards the biblical usage of the word it is used in the same sense as pit or spring of water.

With the foregoing definitions in mind let us examine wells in the biblical sense and their spiritual significance to Christians today. A study of the bible will reveal that there are good and bad wells. There are wells of good fortune and wells of bad fortune.

In fact, every source is a well of some sorts. You will discover as you read further that the abundance of whatever you have in life good or bad is determined by the type of wells you are drawing from. When she conceived and put to bed Hagar disrespected her mistress and was sent packing. She left with her son, a loaf of bread and a bottle of water. But an incident occurred - signifying the important role a well could play in ones life.

The bible records in Genesis:. Genesis And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. That is taken directly from the Old Testament model of a special priesthood distinct from all other people. A man who preaches the gospel does a particular work that he possesses the ability to do and that he has been appointed by the church to do. He certainly does not stand between you and God. He is not a go-between or an intercessor for you.

He does not serve as a priest on your behalf. The idea that a man can absolve your sins, that he has that kind of authority when you confess your sins to him, or that he stands between you and God, hearkens to a system that is now obsolete and done away with in the church. Then, there is the worship of the Old Testament that is so often borrowed and employed by the supposed New Testament churches of today such as instrumental music.

Mechanical instruments were unknown to the early church for nearly years after Jesus established the church. For nearly six centuries, those who claimed to follow Jesus Christ did not use them in corporate worship. They are not commanded, nor are they spoken of in reference to Christian worship anywhere in the New Testament. If one wants to find scriptural precedent for them, he would have to go all the way back to the temple worship of the Old Testament.

You see, the well has become clogged with the practices of Judaism and it needs to be re-dug by simply using the church that was established by Christ in the first century as our paradigm, as our only model and guide.

The apostles also had to clean out and re-dig the wells that were filled with paganism. This was particularly the case with the church located in the evil, profligate city of Corinth. These Christians had been converted out of idolatry and heathenism, and the result was that many of them, being immature in their faith, were holding on to some of their idolatrous ways. It was very difficult to eradicate this church in Corinth of the influences of the Gentile, pagan society that surrounded them.

Sexual immorality was a problem in the church at Corinth, just like it was in the city of Corinth. In fact, we can read in 1 Corinthians 5 where a man had become guilty of a sexual sin that was not even common among the Gentile people, Paul says. But Paul had to deal with this sin that had reared its ugly head in the Corinthian church because it was such a prominent part of the culture in the city of Corinth.

Those who lived in Corinth thought nothing of sexual immorality. Paul told them not only to withdraw from the man who was living in sin with his stepmother chapter 5 , but he also warned the other believers in this way:. Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. And such were some of you: but … Christians were cleansed of such unrighteousness when they obeyed the gospel. Now, being sanctified, they were to live clean and consecrated lives.

But in the same way the evil of the time affected the church at Corinth, the immorality and paganism that has saturated our culture today finds its way into the church from time to time. And you know what? Jesus when He was tired rested at the well in Samaria and that became the meeting point with the nameless woman.

Hi Helen, thank you for your encouraging emails. About 5 years ago, my wife and I believed that God asked us to redig the country wells. Then God spoke to us about coming to Victoria. We have been here for 14 months. We believe that God wants us to work with the youth to release the springs of life into this generation.

We have had divine appointments and believe that God is going to open doors of opportunities and release revival among the youth in this small country town. Please keep us in prayer. Blessings Geoff and Sharon. It is so good to hear this, Geoffrey. I say yes and amen, thank You Lord for touching the youth in our State and in this township, and for the wells that are springing up — and where healing is needed to the spiritual waters of the land, we say our it out Lord, pour out that healing balm of Your Spirit.

God bless you both, and hi from Melbourne. Dear Beloved sister Helen, Thank you so much for your wonderful messages about wells. I am so much encouraged by this message. I am pastor Julian victor from India. Please pray for us and for our Indian mission work among Hindu people in the villages in India.

With much love and honor Pastor Julian victor India. Thank you woman of God,for the encouraging words. The messages are on point all the time. It is now time! Israel dwelt securely alone at the fountain of Jacob, in a land of corn and new wine; yea, his heavens drop down dew Deut. The fountain of Jacob denotes the Word and the doctrine of truth therefrom. Because the fountain of Jacob signified the Word and the doctrine of truth therefrom, when the Lord came to the fountain of Jacob, He spoke with the woman of Samaria, and taught what is signified by a fountain and by water , as described in John Jesus came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, and Jacob's fountain was there Jesus therefore being wearied with His journey, sat thus by the fountain.

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith unto her, Give Me to drink: Jesus said, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith unto thee, Give Me to drink, thou wouldst ask of Him that He should give thee living water.

Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again; but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water springing up unto eternal life John , 6, 7, 10, 13, As Jacob's fountain signified the Word, the water truth, and Samaria the spiritual church as is frequently the case in the Word , the Lord spoke with the woman of Samaria, and taught that the doctrine of truth is from Him; and that when it is from Him, or what is the same, from His Word, it is a fountain of water springing up unto eternal life; and that truth itself is living water.

Jesus said, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink; who soever believeth in Me, as the Scripture saith, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water John , The Lamb that is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of water; and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes Rev. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely Rev.

The good of love and of charity, which is solely from the Lord, is the life of truth.
