Please Gamble Responsibly. Hurricane Fly regained his crown when winning the Champion Hurdle, silencing the doubters having managed only third place the previous season. McCoy managed to get Synchronised up for a thrilling win, despite the horse having been under pressure for over a circuit of the track. Albertas Run stole the show at the Cheltenham Festival when winning the Ryanair Chase, his second win in the race in a row.
Instead the finish involved one horse: Long Run. He provided trainer Nicky Henderson with a first Gold Cup, whilst Sam Waley-Cohen became the first amateur to win the race for some 30 years.
The champion Denman, who was second in both and , had to settle for the same position once again. He stayed on best to beat the Paul Nicholls-trained Denman , who finished runner-up for the second year in a row. The Champion Hurdle was won by the Nicky Henderson-trained Binocular , who improved on his effort the previous season when he filled third place behind his stablemate Punjabi.
The Ryanair Chase was won by Albertas Run. The Noel Meade-trained Go Native got the meeting off to good start for the large contingent of Irish racing fans that had travelled over the Irish Sea, but that was to be as good as it got.
However, it was Kauto Star and Denman who starred in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the former staying on strongly up the hill to become the first horse to regain the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The win was a poignant one for winning rider Sam Thomas, who had attracted criticism for his ride on Kauto Star earlier in his career.
Trained by Nicky Henderson, Fondmort had chased home Thisthatandtother 12 months earlier. Harchibald followed up his win in the same race 12 months earlier when landing the Champion Hurdle, beating compatriots Harchibald and Brave Inca into second and third respectively, in what was one of the great Cheltenham Festival races.
The first three home were separated by two necks, with Harchibald looking likely to win yards out when still on the bridle. However, this enigmatic sort found much less off the bridle than had looked likely and it was the gutsy Hardy Eustace who showed true grit to win the race for the second year in a row.
The Champion Chase also served up a terrific three-way battle, with the winner Moscow Flyer rewarding favourite backers with a performance for the ages. Kicking King won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Best Mate made history when becoming the first horse since Arkle in the s to win three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups, though both horses were some way behind Golden Miller who recorded five consecutive wins in the race in the s.
Native Upmanship had to settle for second place once more in the Champion Chase, as he chased home Moscow Flyer in the renewal, 12 months after filling the same spot behind Flagship Uberalles. The Champion Hurdle saw a new name etched on the trophy, with Rooster Booster quickening clear to beat Westender by 11 lengths, providing his trainer Philip Hobbs with a first win in the race.
Commanche Court split the pair. The great Istabraq , bidding for a fourth win in the race, was sent off favourite but was pulled up after two hurdles and retired after the race.
It was the first time a horse had won the race three years in a row since See You Then back in the s. Horse racing free bet offers Read Paddy Power Review. Read sport Review. Horse racing betting offers Read Betfair Review. Read Betfair Review. OPT IN. Sizing John wins the Gold Cup!!!
Irish Cavalier is pulled up as Native River leads them over the fourth last with Djakadam upsides him. Cuew Card is being scrubbed aloing. Cue Card falls at the same fence that did for him last year. Djakadam and Native River go around the final bend with Sizing John alongside them Irish Cavalier begins to struggle at the back of the field as Native River leads them along with seven fences to jump.
Native River from Champagne West and Djakadam Cue Card is in midfield. Good news for race commentators: Anseanachai Cliste Irish for The Clever Storyteller has been withdrawn from the Foxhunters Chase by stewards who, according to Racing UK, are concerned that the horse might have been given something other than food or water ahead of the race. More news on that as we get it.
Ami Desbois did the donkey work to two out but there were soon just three vying for victory with Penhill, Monalee and Wholestone taking over. The latter was the first to crack and try as Monalee could, Penhill held the aces as he powered up the hill to win by three and a half lengths.
Wholestone was four lengths away in third. Racing over three miles has been the making of him, as it gives him more time for his jumping. His Djakadam is down to as I type, taking the position as favourite off Native River.
Djakadam has had a clearer run this time than when second for the last two years and perhaps this is a weaker race than those were. If, as some believe, Colin Tizzard is badly out of form, that would allow you to put a line through the next two in the betting. Native River is a dour stayer who will race prominently and may prove hard to reel in on this ground.
Good old Cue Card is back for another go, having fallen at the third-last when cruising last year. Like Sizing John, his stamina for this test is not assured. The others have a lot of work to do on their known form. Willie Mullins saddles his sixth winner of the Festival and Penhill gives jockey Paul Townend his second winner of the afternoon.
Wholestone, Penhill and Monalee jump the last in front. Penhill sweeps into the lead and makes it a quick-fire double for Paul Townend. The field regroups with Augusta Kate and Ruby Walsh plodding along at the back of the field with the favourite Death Duty just in front of him. This trio have a lead of about five lengths over Any Drama and Monalee. Augusta Kate makes a little mistake at a hurdle and only has one behind as things stand Perhaps pining for the goat, Monalee has unshipped David Mullins down at the start.
Horse and jockey have been reunited and all is well in the world again. This is not unheard of in horse-racing, although some horses have been known to prefer the company of sheep to goats. Runner-up in the Champion Hurdle, Arctie Fire got up on the run to the line under Paul Townend to snatch the spoils.
At that stage I had no choice but to drop in, there was nothing I could do about it. A marathon race for novice hurdlers, this is at the mercy of Death Duty according to the betting market. Wholestone has fine course form but comes from the Nigel Twiston-Davies yard that seems out of form. Updated at 2. Wakea leads towards the second last hurdle with a huge lead. Arctic Fire wins under Paul Townend by about a neck carrying top weight after days off the track. Arctic Fire wins the County Hurdle.
Tell Us More already looks under pressure at the back of the field as Wakea opens a lead of about 15 lengths from the chasing posse Wakea leads the field by five lengths from Dominada and Ivanovich Gorbatov Our man in the know has the lowdown on Douvan, who ran and jumped so disappointingly in the Champion Chase on Wednesday. Douvan has a stress fracture to his pelvis. Excellent prognosis. May race again in Autumn, with luck. Defi Du Seuil, wearing the first colours of owner JP McManus, cruised through to challenge at the second-last flight and was switched nearer to the stands rail.
The favourite soon took command and pulled clear on the run-in to score by five lengths from Mega Fortune, who held Bapaume by a short head for second. He travelled so well and I was just trying not to get there too soon. Barry Glendenning Fri 17 Mar Key events Show 5.
