How long has phish been a band

Trey embarked on his first solo tour, Fish toured with his various side projects, Trey and Page joined Phil Lesh for unprecedented Phil and Friends shows and Mike played with a variety of artists. In June, the band got. Having taken some time off from touring during the first few months of the year, Phish hit the road for four shows in April dubbed "Island Tour" because of their locations in Long Island and Rhode Island respectively.

There were amphitheatre shows across the country, finishing with the third installment of their summer tour ending celebrations, entitled "Lemonwheel". Also in August, the band presented their. After a twenty-one show fall tour and their annual Holiday run of four shows in the Northeast, Phish decided to take a short break from touring during the early part of This left the band members free to explore some side projects as well as to get together to compose new Phish material.

It feels like the stuff of a midlife crisis. It is true: Being in Phish is a bit of an extended adolescence. When the documentary came out, and when I toured , 9 I was like, What am I lamenting here? Yes, my friend died. Does that warrant this? At 28, we were staying up all night, doing multiple nights in Vegas, having huge parties, and that was great.

The first time that I tried to stop that, because it had gotten out of control, people were furious — I took their party away. I had a funny conversation with a prominent guy on our crew. Other than pot or whatever, I never really saw drugs until probably 13 years into our career.

And I did it. I joined in. All of a sudden this stuff was everywhere. The second you did it, it was fair game for us to bring it out into the open. Did drugs ever help the music? Mistakenly, I thought it was making me work harder: Now I can stay up three more hours and do more work! I can have five bands instead of three! These are the lies you tell yourself. So was it useful? I hate all that stuff.

Were you using psychedelics, too? That was fun, yeah. Acid — none of that was a problem. The problem was when hard things came around. Look, I went too far. I got to do everything I wanted to do. I love playing music sober, and I also love people out there having a good time. Does that make sense? You may have been! I mean, I think so. I think that way. That was the year of the flooding? I guess not.

It clearly used to bother you , 12 but you seem to have made peace with that idea — to the point that you took the Jerry Garcia role for those big Fare Thee Well 13 shows a few years back. What changed? The comparison was too easy. At 14, 15, 16, I worshiped at the idol of Peter Gabriel — the first couple of Genesis albums and then his solo albums. He was like a god.

Prog rock was our thing. That was when my parents got divorced and I went to boarding school and people there liked the Dead. So we would go to shows. We took acid. It was great. I also worshiped at the idol of early Talking Heads. I was more interested in Yes. But what was cool about seeing those Dead shows was knowing that I was witnessing something important in Jerry Garcia. There was no doubt that something about this guy was going to live on.

It was heartbreaking. It had gone to complete [expletive]. But like I said, it was too easy to draw that connection. Also what happened was when Jerry died, there were Grateful Dead fans that came over to Phish and were disappointed. That was hard. Everything had been going so well. Ah, so the negativity from Deadheads colored your feelings? That was a lot of it. During their tour, the group sold tickets specifically designed for those fans who were taping the concert, a major gesture of goodwill.

Hoist , the band's fifth album, was released in ; one of its songs, "Down with Disease," became Phish 's first video and received some airplay on MTV. Hoist sold better than the group's previous albums, which was an indication of how large the group's fan base had become. In the summer of , they released the acclaimed double-live album A Live One , which attempted to definitively capture the Phish concert experience.

Having already established their own distinctive and devoted fan base, the group soon inherited a large number of displaced Deadhead's following the sudden death of Grateful Dead founder Jerry Garcia. Anastasio would later act as Garcia 's stand-in during the Dead 's 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well shows 20 years later. The year saw two additional releases -- one of them a Trey Anastasio solo project a free-form jazz side project called Surrender to the Air , and the other a full-fledged Phish album entitled Billy Breathes.

Produced by Steve Lillywhite , Billy Breathes garnered the group's best reviews yet and peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hampton Comes Alive , a six-disc release that captured four full live sets over the course of two performances, appeared in late and went gold, a testament to Phish 's rabid following. The band's popularity only grew during the latter half of the '90s, as their ceaseless touring helped make them one of the top concert draws in the nation.

In the spring of , Phish delivered the pastoral studio effort Farmhouse , which was hailed as one of their finest and tightest releases to date; they also landed some mainstream exposure thanks to the single "Heavy Things.

One month later, Elektra reissued The Siket Disc , which was previously available only through mail order; it featured improvisational tracks from the band's Story of the Ghost sessions. Each member branched out in different directions during this period. Anastasio released a series of demos before collaborating with Primus bassist Les Claypool and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland for the bizarre Oysterhead project.

He also released an eponymous solo album during the spring of Jonathan Fishman worked with his own side project, Pork Tornado , as well as the touring jazz combo Jazz Mandolin Project.

Page McConnell released the first recordings from his other band, Vida Blue , and contributed keyboards to Tenacious D 's first record. Mike Gordon , meanwhile, did some work with friend and former employer Col. Bruce Hampton ; he also dabbled in film work, both in front of and behind the camera.

As for the band, Phish became more a part of American culture than ever before, and they made an appearance on The Simpsons before releasing a massive set of live albums as well as a DVD during the spring of By the end of the year, the group bowed to pressure and announced that they would begin to play live dates again, starting at the end of December. Touring soon commenced and continued for a year and a half; however, following the release of Undermind , the group decided to officially call it quits in the summer of Of course, this didn't mean that more albums couldn't be released, as a slew of releases kept the band's spirit alive while maintaining demand for Phish 's reunion.

The year saw the release of a New Year's Eve concert at Madison Square Garden, witnessed another live album with Live in Brooklyn , and brought the mammoth At the Roxy Atlanta '93 , which compiled eight discs of live concert material into one package.
