War has a catastrophic effect on the health and well being of nations. No matter how hard we try, we shall not find meaning nor shall we create it. However, despite this bleak outlook, we should not give up on our search.

We ought to rebel against the conditions of human existence and search for meaning, knowing full well that we shall not find it simply out of spite. The decision to rebel can manifest in various ways. One instance is, obviously, Martin Luther King Jr. Even with nonviolent actions MLK was rebellious. He was beaten, threatened, jailed and eventually martyred, all because he fought for a positive peace with the presence of justice.

Had he not had the willingness to rebel against the unjust social order, our world would be worse off. However, rebellion is valuable to humanity, not only for political reasons, but for aesthetic and personal reasons.

In "Brainstorm" I talk about a number of myths that people have that actually distort how they see the truth about adolescents and one of those myths is that adolescents must obtain some kind of total autonomy, a way of pushing away and rebelling against all adults.

And that's simply not true. While it is true that in every culture the adolescent period is marked by teenagers pushing away from adults, especially the ones that have raised them.

There is usually maintenance of connections to other adults in their lives. And even in other animals besides us as humans you see this, that the adolescent period is a time of pushing away but maintaining connections.

Now, rebellion is natural in the sense of saying, "I am an adolescent, I'm going to try something new," but destruction is not necessary whatsoever. I think as adults, if we embrace the biological necessity of creating more distance, of creating more autonomy, not total autonomy, but more of a sense of asserting one's independence, then there's going to be space within the development of this adolescent in the family, for adults to support that kind of growth.

So when adults say no, I am not going to accept any kind of independence, any kind of autonomy, then a war is created. A war that is really unnecessary. So accepting the natural, biological push for a move away from the parents who raised you is really necessary for us as adults to do to give the space for adolescents to grow in a healthy way.
