Due to leaking charge DRAM loses data even if power is switched on. DRAM is available in the higher amount of capacity and is less expensive. It requires only a single transistor for the single block of memory.
At the time of reading and writing the bit value from the cell, the address line is activated. The transistor present in the circuitry behaves as a switch that is closed allowing current to flow if a voltage is applied to the address line and open no current flows if no voltage is applied to the address line.
For the write operation, a voltage signal is employed to the bit line where high voltage shows 1, and low voltage indicates 0. A signal is then used to the address line which enables transferring of the charge to the capacitor. When the address line is chosen for executing read operation, the transistor turns on and the charge stored on the capacitor is supplied out onto a bit line and to a sense amplifier.
The sense amplifier specifies whether the cell contains a logic 1 or logic 2 by comparing the capacitor voltage to a reference value. However, DRAM needs to be refreshed periodically. The key difference between the two is the technology which is used for holding data. Due to this key difference, other differences arise too. SRAM makes use of latches in order to store data transistor circuit , whereas DRAM uses capacitors for storing bits in the form of charge.
However, DRAM is smaller as well as less expensive per bit. SRAMs havs been primarily designed for fulfilling two main requirements — 1. To take place of DRAMs in those systems which need a low power consumption. The capacitors in DRAM are used for data storage wherein the value of one in a bit showcases that the capacitor is charged. A discharged capacitor depicts a value of zero.
As capacitors tend to get discharged, they are responsible for charge leakage in DRAMs. DRAM has higher power consumption as it continuously leaks charge even when continuous power is supplied to it. This is the reason why this type of RAM is termed as dynamic. To retain data for more extended periods, a DRAM has to be repeatedly refreshed with the help of additional refresh circuitry. Dram needs just one transistor for the creation of a single block of memory. As it is prone to charge leakage, it needs to be refreshed very frequently for retaining its charge.
